Non-compete laws by state
Some states (CA, MN, ND, OK) treat non-competes as void by statute. Washington joins them as of June 30, 2027. Threshold states (IL, CO, MD, ME, RI, VA, MA) only enforce against employees above an income floor. Most other states apply a reasonableness test — duration, geography, scope — that depends heavily on your contract language and the specific facts of your case.
Pick your state below. Each detail page lists the primary statute, the doctrine (red-pencil, blue-pencil, reformation, or partial enforcement), industry carve-outs, garden-leave rules where they apply, and a verification chip showing whether the entry has been verified against the primary source or against a secondary firm tracker.

Coded by regime, not by good-or-bad. Indigo states void non-competes by statute; slate states gate them behind an income floor or an industry rule; bronze states enforce them within reasonableness limits. Hover or tap a state for its verdict.
